The 40-yard distance approximates the length covered during a typical punt hang time, giving scouts a standard interval to evaluate acceleration and top-end speed. Scouts study both the 10-yard split—measuring first-step quickness—and the full time.

The 40 matters most for skill positions: wide receivers, cornerbacks, running backs, and pass rushers are often defined by their times. Electronic timing is the official recorded figure; hand times run slightly faster and are referenced during broadcast coverage.
