It is the most coveted interior alignment in modern even-front football, the position from which the defense's most disruptive interior player is deployed, and the alignment that offensive lines spend the most practice time preparing for. A 3-tech who can consistently penetrate the B-gap on his own disrupts both the run game and the pass game simultaneously. From the outside shoulder of the guard, the 3-tech has natural leverage on the B-gap. The guard cannot easily double-team him with the center—the center is already occupied by the nose tackle or the 0-tech, and rotating to the 3-tech leaves the nose tackle free. The tackle cannot easily help the guard—the tackle has the 5-tech or 9-tech on his own side demanding his attention. The 3-tech is almost always in a one-on-one situation against the guard, which is exactly the matchup the defense wants. The 3-tech's impact on the passing game is equally significant. He's the shortest interior path to the quarterback—one step through the B-gap and he's at the launch point. Interior pass rushers who play 3-tech can generate pocket collapse without needing the arc rush that edge rushers use; they win by penetrating straight ahead through a gap the offensive line has to vacate to run combination blocks to the second level. Historical note: the 3-tech became the signature alignment of the Dallas Cowboys' 4-3 defense in the 1970s and 1980s under Tom Landry, where players like Harvey Martin and Randy White redefined what interior pass rush looked like. The modern NFL's emphasis on 3-tech play traces directly to that era's recognition that interior disruption at the B-gap was the most efficient path to quarterback pressure. ## Example "3-tech to the weak side—outside shoulder of the weak guard, B-gap. The quarterback has nowhere to step up." ## Common Confusion The 3-tech is often conflated with a two-gap interior player. A two-gap defender engages his blocker, reads the ball, and controls both gaps on either side of him—a patient, absorptive technique. The 3-tech attacks his gap—he's a penetrator, not a reader. He's going through the B-gap at the snap, not holding ground and waiting for the run to declare itself.
