# 2i-tech

## Short Definition

A defensive tackle on the inside shoulder of the guard—a one-gap A-gap alignment that prevents the guard from releasing cleanly to the second level.

## Definition

The 2i-technique places the defensive tackle on the inside shoulder of the offensive guard—directly over the A-gap, splitting the space between the guard and center. The "i" designation means inside; this player is positioned to press the A-gap from the gap side of the guard rather than playing the guard head-up. It's a one-gap alignment—this player is responsible for the A-gap exclusively.

From the inside shoulder, the 2i-tech has a natural leverage angle to the A-gap. He can knife directly through the gap at the snap, or he can anchor and read if the run goes away. The positioning prevents the guard from releasing cleanly to the second level—to block the linebacker, the guard has to first push the 2i-tech off his inside shoulder, which takes an extra step and usually gives the linebacker a clean fill lane. That disruption to guard release is one of the primary tactical reasons for using the 2i-alignment.

The 2i-tech appears primarily in even fronts and in Saban-tree defenses that use shaded alignments to create precise gap assignments across the entire front. In a base even front with a 2i to the weak side and a 3-tech to the strong side, the 2i occupies the weak A-gap while the 3-tech occupies the strong B-gap—the combination creates two one-gap penetrators with no two-gap reader between them. The MIKE linebacker fills behind the 2i-tech's gap while the WILL linebacker flows to the front's backside.

In passing situations, the 2i-tech's interior alignment gives him a direct rush lane through the A-gap—the shortest possible path to the quarterback. He doesn't need a speed rush to the edge; he's already between the center and guard, one direct step from the launch point.

## Example

"2i on the weak side—inside shoulder of the weak guard, right over the A-gap. Guard can't release to the linebacker without first clearing the 2i-tech. Watch the linebacker flow clean behind him on the backside cutback. The 2i created that lane by holding the guard in place."

## Common Confusion

The alignment is sometimes treated as just a pre-snap picture—something the defense shows before the ball is snapped. It isn't. The 2i-tech is the assignment. The position on the inside shoulder of the guard tells the defender his gap responsibility before the snap ever happens. It also tells the offensive line their blocking assignment and tells the linebacker what space he's responsible for cleaning up. The technique number encodes the entire gap assignment, not just the physical location.
