# 1-TO-2 or 2-TO-1 Read

## Short Definition

A read for deep-zone defenders: if #2 threatens vertically, gain depth; if #2 releases short, squeeze inside and lock onto #1.

## Definition

The 1-to-2 or 2-to-1 read governs how deep-zone defenders adjust their coverage based on #2's release at the snap. The key is always #2—whether that receiver threatens vertically or releases short determines every other deep defender's responsibility.

For a safety keying #2 (2-to-1): if #2 releases vertically, the safety maintains depth and takes him—staying on 2. If #2 releases short into the flat or underneath, the safety squeezes outside toward #1, who now has no safety help from that side. The safety effectively becomes the #1 defender when #2 vacates the deep threat.

For a corner reading #1 with awareness of #2 (1-to-2): if #2 goes vertical and the safety takes him, the corner plays #1 in trail man with help behind. If #2 is short and the safety squeezes toward #1, the corner widens with #1 knowing he must handle the route without deep support.

The read is the foundation of pattern-match coverage. The same defensive structure can handle both vertical and horizontal route combinations because the assignments adjust in real time based on what #2 does.

## Example

"Safety is keying #2—2-to-1 read. #2 goes to the flat. Safety squeezes outside toward #1 who's running a deep comeback. The corner is in trail. The safety gets there just as the ball arrives—that squeeze from the #2 release gave him the angle."

## Common Confusion

The 1-to-2 and 2-to-1 reads sound like two different concepts but they describe the same mechanism from two different starting positions. A corner reads 1-to-2: he starts on #1, then adjusts if #2 goes vertical. A safety reads 2-to-1: he starts keying #2, then adjusts if #2 releases short. Both are the same key—what does #2 do?—just applied from different alignments.
