# 1-Rat Technique

A Cover 1 safety technique where the defender plays intermediate depth, reading the QB's eyes to bait and jump routes while maintaining deep help.

## Definition

The 1-Rat technique is a specialized safety assignment built around quarterback reading rather than receiver coverage. The safety positions at intermediate depth—typically 8 to 12 yards from the line of scrimmage—with eyes locked on the quarterback's chest and throwing shoulder rather than tracking individual receivers.

As the play develops, the quarterback's drop direction, shoulder angle, and eye movement reveal where the ball is going before it is thrown. The 1-Rat safety reads those cues and repositions toward the target zone—arriving in position to contest or intercept the throw rather than chasing the ball after release.

The technique is effective against quarterbacks who telegraph their intentions, against offenses that rely heavily on intermediate crossing routes and seam patterns, and as a disguise tool—the safety's positioning can look like a deep zone while actually functioning as a lurking pass defender over the middle.

The 1-Rat requires exceptional anticipation and discipline. The safety must resist the instinct to follow receivers with their eyes. Following receivers reveals coverage assignments and allows the quarterback to read the safety rather than the other way around. The technique demands patience—trusting the quarterback read over receiver movement until the safety commits to a closing angle.

## Common Confusion

The 1-Rat technique is not the same as a zone drop. A zone defender drops to a pre-assigned area and waits. The 1-Rat reads the quarterback's eyes and moves to intercept routes—it is a reactive, anticipatory technique, not a positional assignment. A safety sitting in a deep zone and occasionally reading the QB is not running a 1-Rat; a safety actively tracking the QB's focus and closing on that target is.
