# 0-tech

## Short Definition

A defensive lineman aligned directly head-up on the center.

## Definition

The 0-technique places the nose tackle directly over the center, splitting the A-gaps equally. It's the anchor of a single-gap odd front—the nose has no automatic gap responsibility; he reads and reacts to the center's first step.

From this alignment, the defender owns both A-gaps. The center can't ignore him and neither can the guards. That dual-gap threat is the entire point: it forces the offense to account for him with multiple blockers, freeing the linebackers behind him to run free.

In even fronts, the 0-tech is rarely used—those fronts shade the interior linemen to gaps rather than splitting them. When you see a head-up nose, you're almost certainly looking at a 3-4 or odd front.

## Example

"Watch the nose—he's head-up in 0-tech. Both guards have to honor him, which means nobody's getting to the Mike on a double-team."

## Common Confusion

The 0-tech gets confused with a shade technique. A shade has a directional lean—slightly to one side of the center. The 0-tech is truly head-up, splitting the center's frame, with no pre-snap lean indicating a gap.
