## Definition

The two-minute warning is an automatic clock stoppage at the two-minute mark of the second and fourth quarters in the NFL. The officials stop play regardless of what is happening—even mid-drive—and both teams receive a brief break equivalent to a timeout. Play resumes from exactly where it was when the warning triggered.

For the trailing team, the two-minute warning is a free timeout. A team with no timeouts remaining gets one final clock stoppage to regroup, communicate adjustments, and set up the drive. For the leading team, it removes one opportunity to drain the clock—teams managing a late lead must account for the automatic stop in their clock-management calculations.

The two-minute warning exists because football games were once played without a stadium clock visible to players. The officials were the timekeepers, and the two-minute warning informed teams of the remaining time. The rule persists in the modern game as a structural clock-management feature that shapes late-game strategy for both teams.

## Common Confusion
