## Definition

Overtime is the situation when a game is tied at the end of regulation, requiring additional play to determine a winner. The specific format varies by level and league, but the core situation is the same: the normal game has ended without a winner and additional play is required.

In NFL overtime, both teams receive at least one possession unless the first team scores a touchdown. A field goal by the first team keeps the other team alive. If the game remains tied after each team has had a possession, the next score wins. NFL playoff overtime continues until a score occurs with no time limit.

The strategic dimension of overtime is significant. Clock management, scoring decisions, and timeout usage in the final minutes of regulation are all shaped by whether overtime is a viable outcome. A team willing to extend to overtime may play differently on a game-tying drive than one that needs a touchdown to win. Coin tosses determine possession in NFL overtime, and possession order shapes the entire strategy.

In college, overtime starts at the opponent's 25-yard line—no kickoff, no return. Each team gets the ball at the same starting position, and the format continues until one team leads at the end of an overtime period.
