# First and Goal

First down earned inside the opponent's 10-yard line—the goal line replaces the line to gain, giving the offense four downs to score.

## Definition

First and goal occurs when the offense advances the ball inside the opponent's 10-yard line and earns a first down. The line to gain is replaced by the goal line itself—any touchdown ends the drive successfully. The offense now has four downs to score from a compressed field.

The situation eliminates field goal distance as a pressure variable. Inside the 10, a field goal is automatic—the meaningful question is whether to go for a touchdown on every down or manage the possibility of stalling. Most offenses treat first and goal as a genuine scoring opportunity and attack aggressively.

Defense in a first-and-goal situation compresses the field and removes deep zone threats. Every route runs into the end zone quickly; corner routes and fade routes replace intermediate concepts because there's no intermediate field left. Red zone man-beaters—fades, slants, and back-shoulder throws—are deployed specifically because they work in the compressed space that first and goal creates.

## Example

"First and goal from the eight. Defense compresses—everyone within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage. Fade to the back corner: the corner has inside leverage, the ball goes over his outside shoulder to the back pylon. Touchdown. That's the offense attacking the compressed space that first and goal creates."

## Common Confusion

First and goal and goal-line situation describe the same field position but different emphasis. Goal-line situation is a spatial description—the offense is within a few yards of the end zone. First and goal is a down-and-distance designation—the offense has earned a first down within the opponent's 10-yard line and has no additional yardage marker to reach, only the goal line. A team can be in a goal-line situation on any down; first and goal specifically means the offense has a fresh set of downs to use.
