## Definition

The NFC South is one of four divisions in the National Football Conference, comprising the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Created in 2002 as part of the NFL's expansion to 32 teams and comprehensive realignment, the division covers the American South—a region whose football passion is more associated with college football than professional football in many markets, giving NFL franchises here a specific competitive challenge for fan attention.

The division has produced significant Super Bowl success in its brief history—the Saints' championship in 2010 is one of professional football's most culturally resonant titles, coming as it did in the years following Hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans. The Buccaneers' two championships, including the pandemic-era title with Tom Brady in 2021, further establish the division's championship pedigree despite its recent formation.

The Falcons' two Super Bowl appearances—including Super Bowl LI's historic comeback loss to New England after leading 28-3—and the Panthers' NFC Championship appearances in 2004 and 2015 give all four franchises postseason relevance in the division's short history.

Drew Brees' tenure in New Orleans, Cam Newton's MVP-caliber performance with Carolina, and Tom Brady's final championship in Tampa represent three of the division's most prominent individual eras, each defining a franchise's competitive window and the division's national visibility during those years.

## Common Confusion

The NFC South is one of the NFL's two divisions created entirely from existing franchises in the 2002 realignment—no expansion teams were added. The Buccaneers, Falcons, Panthers, and Saints were all pulled from other divisions to form the new structure. Before 2002, these four franchises competed in the NFC West and NFC Central.
