# NFC North

## Short Definition

The NFC North—Bears, Lions, Packers, and Vikings, four of the NFL's oldest franchises sharing a division with a combined century of football tradition.

## Definition

The NFC North is one of four divisions in the National Football Conference, comprising the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings. The division's four franchises include some of the NFL's oldest organizations—the Bears (1920), Cardinals' predecessor franchises, Packers (1921), and Vikings (1961)—with histories that span the full arc of professional football's development.

The Packers' 13 NFL championships—the most in league history—make Green Bay the division's historically dominant franchise. The Bears' storied history, including their 1985 championship team widely considered one of football's greatest, provides a second franchise with deep championship tradition. The Vikings' four Super Bowl appearances without a title define a franchise with consistent excellence and persistent championship frustration. The Lions' long championship drought ended with an NFC Championship appearance in the 2023 season under Dan Campbell.

The division's cold-weather identity is among the NFL's most pronounced—three of the four franchises play outdoors in northern markets where late-season and playoff weather is a genuine competitive factor. Green Bay, Chicago, and Minneapolis in January represent some of the most extreme outdoor playing conditions in professional football.

The Bears-Packers rivalry is the oldest in professional football, dating to 1921, and is consistently cited as the sport's most historically significant rivalry. The two franchises have met more times than any other pair in NFL history.

## Example

"Bears versus Packers since 1921—over 200 meetings, the oldest rivalry in professional football. The NFC North has four of the league's oldest franchises sharing a division that goes back to when football was still figuring itself out."

## Common Confusion

The NFC North was created in 2002—the Bears, Packers, Vikings, and Lions competed in the NFC Central before the realignment. The Lions are the only franchise in the four major North American professional sports leagues to have never appeared in a championship game (Super Bowl), a distinction that persisted until the 2023 season when Detroit finally reached the NFC Championship Game.
