## Definition

The American Football Conference is one of the two conferences comprising the NFL, consisting of 16 franchises organized into four divisions: AFC East, AFC North, AFC South, and AFC West. The AFC was formed in 1970 when the AFL-NFL merger took effect, combining the ten AFL franchises with three NFL teams that agreed to switch conferences—the Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers—to balance the new structure.

Each AFC division contains four teams. The 16 AFC franchises play a 17-game regular season schedule in which division opponents are played twice, creating natural rivalries and divisional stakes that run across the full season. The top seven AFC teams qualify for the playoffs each year, with the four division winners guaranteed berths and three wild card spots awarded by record.

The AFC Championship Game—the conference's annual title game—determines which AFC franchise advances to the Super Bowl. The AFC has been dominated in recent decades by the New England Patriots dynasty under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady (nine AFC championships from 2001 to 2018) and the Kansas City Chiefs era under Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. Both dynasties shaped modern understanding of what sustained conference dominance looks like.

Historically, the AFC absorbed the AFL's offensive innovation tradition—the passing-first philosophy that distinguished the AFL from the NFL—which has influenced how the conference has developed offensively relative to the NFC across different eras.

## Common Confusion

The AFC was created in 1970 as part of the AFL-NFL merger—it is not a direct continuation of the AFL. Three NFL franchises (the Colts, Browns, and Steelers) joined the ten AFL teams to form the AFC, giving it 13 franchises to balance with the 13 remaining NFL teams in the NFC. The AFC and NFC were designed as administrative structures, not competitive leagues.
