## Definition

The AFC North is one of four divisions in the American Football Conference, comprising the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers. The division is routinely cited as the NFL's most physically competitive—all four franchises have strong defensive identities, championship pedigrees, and intense rivalries that make divisional games among the most anticipated on the annual schedule.

The Steelers' six Super Bowl championships are the most in NFL history and establish Pittsburgh as the division's historical anchor. The Ravens' two championships and their identity as a defensive powerhouse create a second championship-caliber franchise in the same division. The Bengals' Super Bowl appearances and the Browns' storied pre-Super Bowl history mean all four franchises have reached the sport's highest levels, though not simultaneously.

The Pittsburgh-Baltimore rivalry is one of the NFL's most intense—two franchises with legitimate championship ambitions in the same division, playing twice a year with playoff implications almost annually. The physical nature of both teams' identities makes their matchups representative of what AFC North football looks like at its highest level.

## Common Confusion

The AFC North was created in 2002 as part of the NFL's expansion to 32 teams and realignment into the current 8-division structure—it did not exist before that realignment. Before 2002, these franchises competed in the AFC Central alongside teams now in the AFC South. The current divisional groupings are less than 25 years old despite the franchises themselves having histories stretching back decades.
