The AFC East—Bills, Dolphins, Patriots, and Jets, historically defined by the Patriots dynasty and one of football's most watched division races.

## Definition

The AFC East is one of four divisions in the American Football Conference, comprising the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and New York Jets. All four franchises were founding members of the AFL in 1960, making the AFC East the only NFL division whose entire membership traces directly to the original rival league. The division has been one of the most historically competitive in professional football.

The Patriots' dynasty under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady from 2001 to 2019 defined the AFC East for two decades. New England won the division in 17 of those 19 seasons, making the division title one of professional football's most predictable outcomes during that era. The three other franchises spent much of that period in the position of needing to beat the AFC's dominant team twice a year simply to remain relevant in the playoff race.

The post-Brady AFC East has seen a significant competitive rebalancing. Josh Allen's development as a franchise quarterback in Buffalo elevated the Bills to genuine championship contention, ending the Patriots' structural divisional advantage. The Dolphins' offensive investment and the Jets' continued rebuilding created a division where multiple teams regularly compete for the same playoff spots.

The division's New York metropolitan market—which includes both the Jets and, by regional proximity, the Giants across the division line—gives the AFC East unusual media concentration and fanbase size relative to other divisions whose geographic footprints are more dispersed.

## Common Confusion

The AFC East's four franchises—Bills, Dolphins, Patriots, Jets—are not all based in the northeastern United States in the same geographic cluster. The Bills play in Orchard Park (near Buffalo), the Patriots in Foxborough (outside Boston), the Jets and Giants share a stadium in New Jersey. The division is a competitive grouping, not a strictly geographic one, though all four markets are in the Northeast.
