# Under Center

## Short Definition

The quarterback alignment with hands directly under the center—maximizing play-action and boot deception at the cost of pre-snap coverage visibility.

## Definition

Under center describes the quarterback alignment where the quarterback's hands are directly under the center's backside to receive the snap. The quarterback is positioned 1 to 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage, as close to the line as any alignment allows.

The under-center alignment gives the quarterback the best angles for play-action fakes—the close proximity to the backfield makes a handoff fake look identical to a real handoff at full speed. It also enables the quarterback to feel the defense's pressure through his feet, manipulate the pocket laterally, and execute boots and rollouts with the natural footwork generated from under center.

The tradeoff is pre-snap visibility. A quarterback under center cannot see the full defense the way a quarterback in shotgun can. His read happens in the first steps of his drop—he's reading on the move rather than from a stationary pre-snap position. Under center is more natural for quick game, play-action, and boot schemes; shotgun is more natural for deeper drop-back passing where pre-snap reads drive the decision.

## Example

"Quarterback under center—hands directly under the center. Hard count, defense jumps. He can hear their footwork, feel the pressure timing. Play-action fake: the linebacker bites on the handoff because the quarterback is right there in the backfield. That's the under-center alignment working as designed."

## Common Confusion

Under center and shotgun describe where the quarterback lines up, not the play type. A quarterback under center can throw; a quarterback in shotgun can run. The alignment determines snap mechanics and pre-snap positioning, not whether the play is a pass or a run. Confusing under center with run-only football or shotgun with pass-only football misreads how modern offenses use both.
