# Stack Formation

## Short Definition

An alignment where two receivers line up one directly behind the other, protecting the rear receiver's release and creating natural crossing opportunities.

## Definition

The stack formation is one of flag football's most important alignments. With no offensive blocking to create separation, the stack uses proximity and receiver positioning to solve the problem that man coverage creates.

Common stack releases: inside/outside breaks in opposite directions; flat/deep splits creating a high-low stretch; and vertical releases where both receivers attack the same deep zone.

## Example

"Double stack right—the safety has to honor both vertical threats. The slot runs a quick out and the back receiver climbs to the corner route."

## Common Confusion

Teams use stack without coordinated release patterns—receivers breaking in random directions eliminate the formation's advantage. The stack works because of the release, not the alignment alone.
