# Pistol

## Short Definition

A direct-snap formation with the QB 3 to 4 yards deep and a back behind—blending shotgun pre-snap reads with downhill running angles for zone read and RPO.

## Definition

The pistol formation places the quarterback 3 to 4 yards behind the center—deeper than under center but shallower than standard shotgun—with a running back aligned 2 to 3 yards directly behind the quarterback. The back is in the same relative position as a traditional I-Formation tailback, just compressed forward.

The formation combines advantages from both under-center and shotgun alignments. The quarterback has the pre-snap read benefits of a deep snap alignment. The back has a downhill running angle rather than running sideways to the ball carrier path. Zone-read and RPO concepts look identical whether the play is a give or a keep—the back's alignment makes both decisions read the same to the defense.

Pistol was developed by Chris Ault at Nevada and popularized at the college level before becoming a standard NFL formation. It is particularly effective for quarterbacks who are both passers and runners, because the formation enables designed quarterback runs with a natural back alignment that provides an immediate pitch or keep option.

## Example

"Pistol formation—quarterback 4 yards deep, back directly behind him. Zone read: quarterback reads the unblocked end. End stays, quarterback gives. The back hits downhill into the B-gap with his full runway. Same alignment, same read, whether it's a give or a keep. That's what the pistol does."

## Common Confusion

Pistol and shotgun look similar—both have the quarterback in a deep snap alignment. The distinction is depth and backfield. In shotgun, the quarterback is 5 to 7 yards deep with no back directly behind him. In pistol, the quarterback is 3 to 4 yards deep with a running back aligned directly behind him. The pistol preserves a true backfield while keeping the quarterback in a direct-snap alignment.
