# I-Formation

## Short Definition

Two backs stacked vertically behind the QB under center—the classic power-run formation built around lead blocking and effective play-action.

## Definition

The I-Formation aligns the quarterback under center, the fullback 4 to 5 yards behind him, and the tailback 7 to 8 yards deep directly behind the fullback. The three players stack vertically on the center—hence the name. The formation creates immediate run-threat depth: the tailback has a full runway to develop his read while the fullback positions himself to lead-block through the hole.

The I is historically the foundation of power and gap-scheme run games. The fullback kicks out or logs the edge defender; the tailback reads the block and hits the created lane at full speed. The formation is less common in modern spread-era football because it telegraphs run intentions and the fullback is a declining position, but it remains effective in short-yardage and goal-line situations where defenses expect the run anyway.

Play-action from I-Formation is particularly effective when the run game has been established. Both safeties and linebackers are disciplined to the backfield action—a play-fake that holds those defenders creates throwing windows that spread formations can't generate because the threat isn't credible.

## Example

"I-Formation, fullback and tailback stacked behind the quarterback. Power play right—the fullback leads through the B-gap, kicks out the linebacker. Tailback follows right behind him, presses the hole, cuts off the block. That's the I-Formation doing exactly what it was designed for."

## Common Confusion

The I-Formation is confused with any two-back set. What defines the I is the alignment—fullback directly behind the center between the quarterback and tailback, creating a straight vertical line. A split-back or offset formation with two backs is not an I-Formation even if it has the same personnel. The vertical stacking is the defining characteristic.
