# H-Back

## Short Definition

A hybrid back (often a tight end or fullback type) who can align in the backfield or flex out as a receiver; used to create multiple formation options.

## Definition

The H-back is a hybrid player who can align in the backfield as a lead blocker, detached off the line as a slot receiver, or attached next to the tackle as an in-line blocker—all from the same personnel grouping. The position creates a pre-snap identification problem for the defense. If the linebacker accounts for him as a blocker, he releases into a route. If the defense plays him as a receiver, he seals in the run game.

The H-back is most dangerous in play-action systems. His motion from a backfield or wing alignment to a receiving position pulls linebacker eyes and creates openings underneath. He's typically a controlled release valve—not the primary target, but a consistent problem on every down because the defense can't commit to one answer for him.

## Example

"H-back is aligned in the right backfield—looks like he's blocking. He goes in motion to the flat. The linebacker follows him. Now there's a running lane inside and the tight end is releasing into the seam with nobody underneath him. The motion created both opportunities."

## Common Confusion

The H-back is often confused with the fullback. A fullback aligns in the backfield and primarily blocks or runs from one position. The H-back's defining characteristic is positional flexibility—he can align differently on different plays from the same personnel grouping, which is what creates the coverage conflict.
