# Bunch

## Short Definition

An alignment where two or three receivers cluster within 2–3 yards of each other to create natural picks, traffic, and route conflicts for defenders.

## Definition

Bunch clusters two or three receivers within 2 to 3 yards of each other before the snap. That tight alignment forces an immediate problem on the defense: how do you cover three receivers in a compressed space without creating the natural traffic that frees one of them? Man coverage struggles with picks and rubs as receivers cross paths. Zone coverage gets flooded by routes attacking the same area from different depths.

The conflict starts before the snap. The defense has to declare man or zone and communicate its coverage assignment to the right defenders in a compressed window. The offense designs its route combinations specifically to punish whatever answer the defense gives—with routes built to beat man underneath if the defense goes zone, or to create rubs if it goes man.

## Example

"Three receivers bunched right, all within two yards pre-snap. Corner and nickel are trying to declare man, but they can't get clean alignment before the ball moves. Inside receiver runs flat, middle runs a corner, outside runs a dig. The nickel can't follow all three. That conflict is what the bunch was designed to create."

## Common Confusion

Bunch is sometimes treated as just a pick play waiting to happen. The traffic that develops is the result of route geometry—receivers running through the same space—not illegal contact. The offense designs routes to create natural rubs; the defense has to solve them without fouling.
