# 22 Personnel

## Short Definition

2 running backs, 2 tight ends, 1 wide receiver—the heaviest standard grouping for short-yardage, goal-line, and power run situations.

## Definition

22 personnel puts two running backs and two tight ends on the field with one wide receiver. It is the heaviest common personnel grouping in the modern game—four players who can block or receive, one dedicated pass catcher on the perimeter. The grouping creates maximum run-blocking surface and is the standard package for short-yardage, goal-line, and power situations.

Defenses must match with extra run-stopping personnel to counter the grouping's blocking advantage. The trade-off is that 22 personnel is severely limited as a passing package—one wide receiver means one guaranteed perimeter threat, and the tight ends must work as receiving options to give the quarterback multiple reads.

The tight ends in 22 personnel are often deployed in two-point stances or as inline blockers, giving the offense a third and fourth gap blocker on runs while also threatening as receiving outlets on play-action. The grouping's value peaks inside the 5-yard line where blocking surface matters more than route combinations.

## Example

"22 personnel at the goal line—two backs, two tight ends, one receiver. Defense brings nine defenders into the box. Offense runs power: both tight ends seal the inside, fullback kicks the edge linebacker, tailback follows into the end zone. That's 22 personnel doing exactly what it was built for."

## Common Confusion

22 personnel and heavy formation aren't the same. 22 personnel defines who is on the field—2 backs and 2 tight ends. Heavy formation describes the alignment philosophy—packing the box. A team in 22 personnel could spread both tight ends out as detached receivers and run an empty-ish concept. Personnel and alignment are separate decisions made from the same grouping.
